Many different kinds of love are explored in ABHM, from Henry's love of her dog Carlos to Rebecca's claims of the love between herself and the mad King John. Love is a leading force in the decisions made by many of the characters in the book. Sophia's infatuation with Simon causes her to try and convince her cousin, Veronica, to get involved in the talks between Sapin and other nations. Sophia loves easily, but Veronica does not wear her heart on her sleeve. Veronica is a girl with a prickly outside, but a strong sense of loyalty and family. Her love for her family is what keeps her going. Even though her father is insane and despises Veronica for her resemblance to her mother, Veronica still tries to be tolerant of him and his temper. Toby is one of the most interesting characters when it comes to love. Toby is devoted to his family and friends, but also harbors a secret about love. Although it is never officially stated in the book, it is implied that Toby is gay and that Simon is bisexual. A more outlandish love is the supposed love and union between the king and Rebecca. Rebecca claims that the king loves her and that Simon is their child, making him first in line for the throne of Montmaray. Rebecca's love for her son is so strong that she would do anything to get him on the throne and in a position of power.
