Paul Atreides fits many of the qualities of the archetypal hero. He is of noble birth, as he is the heir to his father's dukedom. Paul was born in unusual circumstances. His mother, Jessica, a "Bene Gesserit Witch", was ordered by her superiors to give birth to a daughter. She defied these orders and gave birth to a son to make the Duke Leto happy. As Reverend Mother Helen Mohiam states "You were told to only bear daughters to the Atriedes...And you in your pride thought you could produce the Kwisatz Haderach!"(Herbert 35). Paul's quest starts when he arrives on Arrakis. His father is turned into a weapon by the traitor-but-not-exactly-traitor Dr.Yueh, and Leto dies trying to kill the main antagonist Baron Harkonnen. Paul survives multiple assassination attempt and crosses the deserts of Arrakis in his crossing of the threshold. There, he lives amongst the Fremen, defeating and killing one of their men in single combat to cement his place among the desert tribe. Paul has Mentat abilities, which function as his special weapon or power. Heroes commonly receive supernatural help, and Paul is no exception. He drinks the Water of Life, which awakens his body and allows him to unlock his role as the Kwisatz Haderach.
Paul is predicted to be the Kwisatz Haderach, the only man with the powers of the Bene Gesserits, as well as much more. This mystical being would have the power to look into the past and the future, and would be omniscient and extremely powerful. He is called Lisan al-Gaib by the Fremen, who come to revere him as a god. They have heard tales of a man with Paul's powers, thanks to the foresight of the early Bene Gesserits.

It is said a man will come one day and find the gift of the drug in his inward eye. He will look where we cannot-into both feminine and masculine pasts...Yes, the one who can be in many places at once: the Kwisatz Haderach"(Dune 19 and 20)
