Deliver Us - Prince of Egypt Soundtrack
I chose this song because Dune has always resonated with me as a sort of biblical story. It may sound like a kind of generalization, but the Fremen remind me of the story of the Israelites and their journey through the desert to find a promised land. The Isrealites believe in a Messiah who will come one day and deliver them from evil to a promised land, similarly to the Fremen who believe in a messiah figure that will wage holy war, or jihad, to reclaim a promised land.
Mini World - Indila
This song is in French, but the meaning quite clearly resonates in English. It is a song about fate and the nature of reality. In Dune, Paul must come to grips with his reality when he realizes his fate as the Kwisatz Haderach. He bears this burden strongly but it leaves a lasting impression and greatly impacts his relationships with others and with the world as a whole.
Bad Blood - Bastille
Bad Blood tells the story of two friends who split apart and became the ultimate rivals. The Houses Atriedes and Harkonnen are rivals in the Dune universe. The Baron Harkonnen tries to assassinate both Paul and his father on multiple occasions, and Leto responds by trying to kill the baron with his last breath (literally). SPOILERS: At the end of the book, Paul tries to mend the differences as much as he can, which is that much to begin with.
Playing God - Paramore
In Dune, religion is used as a cover for the shadow government that has secretly controlled everything leading up to Paul's birth. The Bene Gesserit even established a breeding program to produce the perfect Kwisatz Haderach, which Jessica disrupts. Playing God is about overreaching power and selfish control, both of which the Padishah Emperor and the Bene Gesserit are guilty of.
21 Guns - Green Day
21 Guns resonates with Dune in its theme of war and sacrifice. Paul's role on Arrakis is to wage holy war against the Padishah Emperor. Paul is adept in fighting thanks to his many tutors, but he takes on the burden of a commander in war and must sacrifice some of his people for the greater good. Paul learns the value of sacrifice and the truth that there is little glory in war.
Zombie - Maitre Gims
Zombie is another song in French. The lyrics of this song made me think of what it would feel like to be under the control of someone like a mentat who can manipulate minds. The lyrics tell of someone who is manipulated and deceived by another, leading the person astray and devoid of true feeling.
