Amongst the Fremen, water is a form of currency but also holds cultural and religious significance. Kahn says " Guichidar mantene: It is written in the Shah-Nama that water was the first of all things created" (Herbert 504). After Paul kills Jamis in combat, he is given Jamis's water in a ceremony called the weighing of the water. Paul cries over Jamis's body, shocking the Fremen. They whisper " He sheds tears!... Usul gives moisture to the dead!"(Herbert 509). Paul's tears are the mark of ultimate reverence, for Fremen do not cry unless they see a truly sacred reason to give such a gift to the shadow world.
